Opgroeiend in een familie van verhalenvertellers raakt Ozan Aydogan (1993) op jonge leeftijd gefascineerd door de kunst van de vertelling. De verhalen uit Oost-Turkije die zijn ouders hem vertellen voor het slapengaan, de oude sprookjesboeken die zijn moeder bij elkaar sprokkelt op vlooienmarkten en de levendige anekdotes die, vergezeld door de klanken van de saz en de zoete geur van raki, vanuit de woonkamer zijn slaapkamer bereiken. Getuige zijn van al deze verhalen wakkert in hem een interesse aan die zich nooit eerder aan hem openbaart. Het duurt dan ook niet lang voordat zijn eerste werken het daglicht zien. Dit zijn eerst rapteksten. Maar nadat Ozan op de middelbare school op aanraden van een vriend Lord Byron leest, begint hij gedichten te schrijven. Tussen deze twee stromen wordt het zaadje geplant dat later zal ontkiemen tot spoken word.

Na een paar jaar, tijdens zijn stage bij Artiance, een centrum voor de kunsten, ontmoet Ozan een nieuwe liefde; acteren. Terwijl hij zijn eerste voorstelling speelt, waarvoor hij direct alle liedjes schrijft en waaraan hij bijdraagt met mono- en dialogen, heeft hij zijn eerste ervaringen als toneelschrijver. Vanaf dat moment blijft hij verhalen vertellen. In samenwerking met High On Type en RAUM met zijn binaurale spoken word installatie Prachtige Wezens, in Athene met Dries Verhoeven’s Phobiarama, in de Videoland serie Baantjer waarin hij een gastrol speelt, in Parijs op het Wereldkampioenschap Poetry Slam – nadat hij in 2018 Nederlands Kampioen Poetry Slam wordt – en met een hoofdrol in Orkater’s De Vreemdeling waarmee hij speelt in schouwburgen door heel Nederland.

In 2022 is Ozan te zien in de FC Bergman en ITA co-productie De Toverberg (naar de gelijknamige roman van Thomas Mann) dat in augustus te zien zal zijn op het Edinburgh Festival ’22. Ook werkt Ozan aan zijn debuutroman die verwacht wordt te verschijnen in 2024.

Ozan is afgestudeerd aan de Amsterdamse Toneelschool en Kleinkunstacademie.

Growing up in a family of storytellers, Ozan Aydogan (1993) gets fascinated by the art of storytelling at a young age. The bedtime stories from Eastern Turkey that his parents tell him, the old fairytale books that his mother harvests at flea markets and the lively anecdotes that reach his bedroom from the living room, accompanied by the sweet smell of raki and the sounds of the saz. Witnessing all those stories arouses an interest in him that has never shown itself to him before. And so it doesn’t take long before his first works see the light of day. Those are raps at first. But after reading Lord Byron during high school on the advice of a friend, he starts writing poetry. Between those two streams the seed is planted that will later germinate into spoken word. 

After a few years, during his internship at Artiance, a center for the arts, a new love appears before him; acting. While doing his first play, immediately writing all of its songs and contributing by writing mono- and dialogues, he has his first experiences with playwriting. From that moment on he keeps telling stories. He has done so in co-operation with High On Type and RAUM with his binaural spoken word installation Beautiful Creatures, in Athens with Dries Verhoeven’s Phobiarama, in the Videoland series Amsterdam Vice in which he plays a guest role, in Paris at the Poetry Slam World Championship – after becoming Poetry Slam Champion of the Netherlands in 2018 – and with a starring role in the theater in Orkater’s The Stranger with which he has toured throughout the Netherlands. 

In 2022 Ozan will appear in the FC Bergman and International Theater Amsterdam co-production The Magic Mountain (based on the eponymous novel by Thomas Mann) which will play at the Edinburgh Festival ’22 in August. He also works on his debut novel that is expected to be published in 2024. 

Ozan graduated from Drama & Contemporary Music Theater at the University of the Arts in Amsterdam.
